COLUMBIA 'E' SERIES

 Other pages in this summary...

This part of the discography outlines the 'Anthology' series (which although was never considered officially part of the 'Masterworks family') it did cover some 'serious' music and is therefore included here for reference purposes. This series has been given the 'E' prefix.

Little is known of this short-lived 'series' - and I use that term loosely here as it is not commonly known by this prefix - even though it was given this prefix… The "E" stands for "Educational," because these sets were listed in the "Educational" section of the 1942 Columbia Catalog.  10 "E" sets are listed in this catalog, and there was an eleventh listed in the 1946 catalog (by which time, the "Educational" section was also listing other recordings that could be described thus).

The "Masterpieces of Literature" sets are spoken word recordings. E-5 is by Norman Corwin, E-6 by Wesley Addy, and E-11 by Basil Rathbone.  All three contain six 10-inch records.  For example, E-6 contains prose readings of an American patriotic nature (Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, etc.).  The set includes a booklet for use in classrooms with a note that additional copies of the booklet may be purchased for students. The labels are bright orange with black print, even though the numerical sequence of the records (in the 35000s-36000s range) belongs to the red-label Popular series.

This short section lists the details of each set - including artist information, if known.

If you find any errors, or have information pertaining to a set and wish to share, please contact us.

Alexander Cores (violin) and Sergius Kagen (pianoforte) were the principle musicians featured in this series. Bernard Greenhouse (cello) also featured as well.

I am indebted to Brian Bishop for his help and assistance regarding information on this series.
